Clay and Acetate — The Two Materials at the Heart of TARIAN
The material is the message.
TARIAN is not simply a producer of Paris eyewear. It is a practice of materials — of understanding what a substance carries within it before deciding what shape to give it. Raw, refined, always elegant: the material signs the identity of the brand before the frame does. This is what separates independent eyewear from fashion accessories: the depth of conviction behind each material choice.
Some materials refuse to remain hidden. They carry within them the trace of the earth from which they came, the hands that shaped them, the heat that passed through them. Clay is one of those materials. And in the atelier at 50 rue des Tournelles, in the heart of the Marais, Jérémy knows it better than anyone.
Colour that belongs to the object
In ceramics as in the luxury glasses TARIAN produces, colour is not decoration. It is constitutive of the object itself — nested in its identity, revealed by the hand and the fire.
From smooth, calming white stoneware to earth-anchored ochre, through volcanic, tensed black, TARIAN ceramics form a conversation between raw earth, kiln heat and the permanent fragility of the material. Through oxides — copper, cobalt, chrome — the clay surfaces an ancestral anger. Each piece carries the memory of earth and fire, and that singular fragility which gives things their value.
Four collections, one gesture
BRUTE and COLORS interrogate volume and material through hand-building — that archaic gesture, the oldest humanity has placed on earth. Each object carries its irregularities as distinctions. The BRUTE vases enter into dialogue with one another: Jérémy develops a sculptural approach in which the modelling becomes a means of exploring volume, material and the balance of form.
ESSENTIEL draws its strength from the authenticity of its lines and the natural simplicity that defines it. These are forms stripped to their essence, informed by ancestral ceramic techniques — notably coiling. Subtle colour gradients bring a quiet modernity to objects conceived to age with elegance and to patina harmoniously over time.
MASK, created since 2018, are faces in coloured clays — multiple expressions suspended between everyone and no one. Between concealment and metamorphosis, these masks invite escape. Their assemblages of coloured clays, singular expressions and rich patterns compose as many faces as there are stories and journeys.
CIELO is a series of unique works that refuse flatness: reliefs in faïence with varied textures and colours, made to be felt rather than touched, admired rather than merely observed. From the alliance of different forms, others emerge — designed to immerse the viewer in an experience that awakens all the senses.
Two materials, one conviction
The cellulose acetate from which TARIAN's handmade glasses are made yields to the same wisdom as clay tinted with oxides. In both cases, colour is woven into the material. An acetate with crystalline brilliance or the warm transparency of amber tortoiseshell carries its complexity within itself — just as ochre stoneware carries the earth from which it comes. Both reflect the world with grace, catch the light differently at every moment, and reveal nuances the first glance had not yet grasped.
This is the deeper logic of TARIAN as a French eyewear house: both practices — ceramic and optical — start from the same place. The material is chosen first. Everything else follows.
Made in Paris — since 2020
Since 2020, every TARIAN ceramic carries the Fabriqué à Paris label. Each piece takes form here, in the same Marais atelier where the luxury sunglasses and optical frames are born. Two disciplines, one address, one conviction.
