How UV Protection Works in Quality Sunglasses
UV protection is the most misunderstood specification in luxury sunglasses. Darker lenses do not mean more protection. More expensive frames do not automatically mean better protection. And the difference between adequate and excellent UV filtration is not always visible to the eye — but it matters for your long-term eye health.
What UV radiation actually is
Ultraviolet radiation is light at wavelengths shorter than visible light. The sun produces UV-A (315–400nm) and UV-B (280–315nm), both of which can damage the eye over time — contributing to cataracts, macular degeneration, and other conditions that accumulate silently across years of exposure.
UV-C (below 280nm) is largely absorbed by the atmosphere and is not typically a concern at ground level.
The lens colour misconception
A common assumption is that darker lenses offer more UV protection. This is incorrect. UV filtration is a property of the lens material and any coatings applied to it — not of its tint. A very dark lens with no UV treatment offers no UV protection whatsoever. A lightly tinted or even clear lens with full UV treatment offers complete protection.
In designer glasses and luxury sunglasses of quality, the UV specification is independent of the cosmetic tint. Look for lenses rated UV400 — this means they block all UV radiation up to 400nm wavelength, covering both UV-A and UV-B.
Polarisation and UV: two different things
Polarisation eliminates horizontal glare — reflections from water, glass, and wet road surfaces. It does not affect UV protection. The two are separate specifications. Premium optical frames and sunglasses from serious independent eyewear brands offer both — but they are additive, not equivalent.
Lens size matters
A larger lens covers more of the eye and the surrounding skin — reducing UV exposure at the periphery. This is one reason oversized luxury sunglasses are not merely a fashion choice: they offer genuinely better protection than small frames, particularly for peripheral vision.

What to check when buying
For any pair of handmade glasses or luxury sunglasses, check that the lenses are rated UV400. This is a non-negotiable standard for any frame sold in the European market, but it is worth confirming. Look also for anti-reflective treatment on the interior lens surface — this eliminates internal reflections that can cause eye strain in bright conditions.

Protecting your investment
UV-protective coatings can degrade over time, particularly if lenses are exposed to solvents, extreme heat, or abrasive cleaning. This is another reason to care properly for premium optical frames and their lenses — the protection is in the lens, and the lens deserves the same care as the frame.
Store your frames in a hard case. Clean lenses with proper lens solution and a microfibre cloth. Avoid leaving luxury sunglasses in direct heat. The frame is built to last. Treat the lenses accordingly.
